St. Augustine’s Institute is an institute established and owned by the Uganda Episcopal Conference. The bishops who are the members of this conference use the premises for their regular meetings, one in the first ten days of June and the other in the first week of November. They also usually meet as a conference around February or March for not more than 10 days, for a study conference or a retreat. Outside these times the institute is open for its other programs, even though occasionally a bishop or two may pass by while on their errands in the city.
Besides St. Augustine’s Institute, there are many places where one can receive retreats, renewal programs and ongoing formation courses in Uganda. Each of these places has its own orientation and caters for different human and spiritual needs. They include ARU in Nsambya-Kampala, Daniel Comboni Center and Namugongo, Namugongo Spiritual Center, Emmaus Center in Kasana-Luweero diocese Comboni Spiritual Center at Layibi in Gulu, Yezu Ahuriire in Mbarara, and Serenity Center off Kampala-Entebbe road, Divine Mercy Retreat Center, Gogonya.
Managing Stress and Burnout is one among many courses offered at St. Augustine’s institute. As for several other courses, there is literature availed by institute staff on this topic. Please, see the course overview and services overview in order to get to know what the institute offers. As extras, you can read a day’s reflection on the readings, both for weekdays and Sundays at our Worship corner, where you also find the daily readings and an account of the saint of the day. Don’t forget to peruse the available publications by some of the institute staff.
Up to now the courses have been subsidized, thanks for the continued generosity of our funders for the courses, Missio Munich and Church in Need in Germany. For that reason those who attend the courses offered in 2019 pay UGX 10,000/- per day. The only exception is the Ignatian retreats where participants pay UGX 15,000/- per day. In comparison, guests who receive full board at the institute pay UGX 75,000/- for accommodation and meals.

Yes, lay people are allowed to attend those courses which are not exclusively for priests, for instance: course John, Course Phillip, Course John, and Ignatian Retreats. However, they need to note that our donors give a subsidy exclusively for priests and religious. Lay people who attend might have to be asked to pay the full fee of accommodation, meals and course charges. Nevertheless, there can be concessions in individual cases. Outside renewal courses, lay people are welcome to use the institute for accommodation, conferences, seminars, outdoor functions, etc.
Augustine’s Institute is not a reformatory or a place for “panel beating” of errant priests, as many erroneously thought at its beginning. In today’s fast-pacing world every professional needs to keep up-to-date in order to remain relevant. Even much more is a priest (and for that matter, any pastoral agent) who, in order to remain effective needs both to remain united to Jesus Christ and to be abreast with the changing times. They need ongoing formation.
